First Choristers: Auditioned Choir for Grades 4 through 8
First Choir: Auditioned Adult Choir for Grade 9 and up
The First Choristers program began in 2009 as an opportunity for young people (First Choristers) and adults (First Choir) to sing great works of choral music in the English choir school tradition. Singers rehearse weekly for a period of three months in preparation for a major concert event – a Festival of Lessons and Carols in December, and a large choral masterpiece in April. First Choristers is a unique opportunity for children to experience music making at a very high level of quality and musical enjoyment, at the same time learning “life lessons” about teamwork and cooperation.
Rehearsals will begin in mid-September: Adults on Thursday evenings from 7:30-8:45, Youth on Sunday afternoons, 3:30-4:45. The youth choir (First Choristers) will present one piece on their own, and will sing with the adult sopranos for most of the other works. This is a unique opportunity for youth to be exposed to a high caliber of choral singing, with an emphasis on vocal production, teamwork, and Christmas spirit. It is also a tremendous opportunity for adults to sing as part of a Festival modeled after that at King’s College, Cambridge, England.
The organist/choirmaster for this event is First Congregational’s director of music, Scott Lamlein.
Auditions may be scheduled at any time – click here for full rehearsal schedule and application and click here for more details about the concerts.
